Azure Policy Speeds Up: The Old Login-Logout Trick Is Finally Retiring

Policy admins, update your runbooks. Microsoft posted an important Azure Policy notice on March 4, 2026: Resource Manager mode policy assignments and updates now get enforced within 5 minutes, and the old login-logout workaround is being retired.

This is both a speed improvement and an operational behavior change.

What Changed

Microsoft says Azure Policy responsiveness has improved enough that policy assignment creation and updates now propagate within five minutes.

Because of that, the long-standing login/logout workaround used to force faster propagation is going away on April 30, 2026.

Why It Matters

This is good news, but it also means teams need to stop relying on muscle memory and outdated docs.

- Faster policy enforcement means less waiting after changes. - Less operational weirdness means a cleaner and more predictable service. - Runbook updates are required before the workaround disappears.

If your internal docs still tell admins to sign out and back in after policy updates, those instructions are now on borrowed time.

What Needs Attention

The key risk here is not the platform. It is process drift.

Teams that automate policy rollouts, governance checks, or validation workflows should verify that no tools or instructions assume the workaround still exists after April 30, 2026.

What To Do Next

1. Review runbooks and wiki pages for login/logout guidance. 2. Update policy rollout expectations to the new five-minute window. 3. Notify governance and platform teams before the April 30, 2026 cutoff.

This is a small change on paper, but these are exactly the changes that create confusion if nobody updates the process layer.

The Bottom Line

Azure Policy is getting faster and cleaner, which is the right direction. Just do not miss the operational side: the workaround retires on April 30, 2026, so your team should adjust now.

Five minutes is a lot better than folklore.
