Microsoft updated the timeline for managing Microsoft Sentinel in the Azure portal, extending the sunset date to March 31, 2027.

What Changed

Customers were previously working toward a July 1, 2026 transition deadline for moving Sentinel management fully into the Defender portal.

Microsoft has now pushed that Azure portal end date out to March 31, 2027.

Why This Matters

Portal transitions sound simple in PowerPoint and messy in real operations.

Security teams have:

Runbooks

Training materials

Custom workflows

Analyst muscle memory

Extending the timeline gives customers more room to move without forcing unnecessary disruption.

What You Should Do

Do not confuse an extended deadline with a cancelled direction.

The Defender portal is still where Microsoft wants Sentinel management to live over time.

Use the extra runway to:

1. Test workflows in the Defender portal. 2. Update analyst procedures. 3. Identify feature or usability gaps before the cutover becomes non-optional.

Bottom Line

This is a sensible move. Large security teams do not benefit from rushed platform transitions.

The new deadline of March 31, 2027 gives customers breathing room, but it should be used for preparation, not procrastination.
